Javier Venegas English 1A 5/19/2017 Does Patriarchy Still Exist? Does patriarchy still exist? Patriarchy is a system of society or government in which men hold the power and women are largely excluded from it. In other words patriarchy means rule over women and nature. This â€Å"system† began since the beginning of time, but was officially established by europeans in America during their migration. Women were not allowed to vote or go to school, and often they were treated like slaves. Their responsibilities were all inside the household and in ways women were only consider breeders.Hoping to have a male child that can take over. Now women have rights; not only are they allowed to go to school they have overpassed men in education around†¦show more content†¦Women are paid less, discriminated, and harassed. Although some might object that women do have equal rights, and patriarchy is a thing of the past. I maintain that they do not, and that much has to be done before they can achieve ending patriarchy. One of the problems the system of patriarchy has in our society is the pay gap between a man and a woman. Study has shown that for every dollar a man makes a woman working the same job only makes seventy nine cents. This is a twenty one percent difference. The US Bureau of Labor shows that back in the nineteen-sixties the difference was much higher than today. The reason behind this is because back in the 1970s it wasn t as important for a woman to get an education. Only 14% of women over the age of 25 had a college degree in the workforce compared to men who had 20%. The issue of education has been resolved in America, not only have women increase the percentage to 40%, but they have surpassed Men by 4%. So if women have better education than man in the workforce; why is there still a pay gap today? There s still issues that need to be addressed. There is still gender segregation in the workforce, as only about 5% of women have a position in construction, maintenance, or natu ral resources.
